I like the cooperative environment where people are generally happy to be here. The team-style environment is very nice. I think former military members would be impressed by the work ethic and dedication of Epic employees. My wife and most of her friends are surgeons at the University of Wisconsin Hospital, so it's really great to be involved with software that they use on a regular basis. Being able to make their jobs easier or more efficient is very important to me.
I like my co-workers - they are driven and intelligent. I like the challenge - you learn new stuff every day, and I'm sort of addicted to learning. I like the culture - if you see something that could be improved, you're free to form a team and come up with a solution. I've always been interested in finding ways to use mechanical engineering skills to make medical discoveries or improvements. Although mechanical engineering problems aren't really solved here at Epic, critical thinking and problem solving skills used in engineering can be used to make significant improvements in the medical field.
The work itself is fun and well-paced, and while you’re encouraged and supported in learning new things on your own, it’s not a culture of ‘sink or swim.’ Much like entering a new unit, you always have your team to support you, but also two whole divisions to support your application knowledge or role performance.
When I came to Epic, I had most recently been a nurse in the civilian world and I chose to work here to make a difference for the clinicians using Epic. I wanted to help make their work tasks more efficient and smooth. I enjoy the variety in my day-to-day responsibilities and the autonomy to run my schedule as I see fit to complete my work. Not only is every day something different, but often you switch focus by the hour.
I like the culture of innovation, the world-class co-workers, and the opportunity to make a positive impact through my work. It's tricky to describe the culture of Epic – a lot of people have heard about the dress code, the cool buildings, the food, and so on. What I tell them about is the supporting culture, the expectation of excellence, and how much I look forward to coming to work every day. I describe the developers who wear their "My code saves lives" shirts, and project managers who talk about patient safety like physicians. I try to get people to understand that the culture of Epic is driven by its values and attitude, and that’s something Epic works very hard to maintain.
