Role at Epic

Writer

Background

Hometown: Hartland, WI
Education: Creative Writing BA (UW-Eau Claire) and MA (UW-Milwaukee)
Professional: I was working in Milwaukee's English as a Second Language office when I decided to work at Epic.

Why did you choose to join Epic?

I really liked the idea of working with really smart people doing important work. I enjoyed my tech writing classes in college but always felt like the projects we were asked to do were a bit pointless. I wanted to work for a company that was doing work that mattered. I also liked that Epic had people from all over the world working here.

What do you like about working at Epic?

I really like the freedom we have to pursue projects that interest us. Life at Epic is always learning something new, always having another hill to climb, another project to master. I like that there are so many areas for us to pursue that you never have reason to be bored or feel you've reached a dead end.
Life at Epic is what you make of it. If you're ambitious and want to work hard, you'll have amazing opportunities to work on a lot of interesting projects. The people here really are the best of the best, which creates an atmosphere where success is expected.

What are some of the projects you've worked on and what role did you play?

Early in my career, I focused on writing and on training our internal writing processes. I've been involved in many writing projects and workgroups and I led the Model System Writers group where we worked on providing the first documentation for the Model System, which now serves as the backbone for our installs. In the last couple years I have become involved with our internationalization and translation projects as the liaison between the writing team and our Dutch office. I now manage many of the writers in my division and have taken a leadership role in driving forward change on our team.

What are your goals for your career at Epic?

I'm going to continue to be involved in figuring out how the writing team can best meet the needs of our international customers. I'd also like to continue to participate in major projects and work with my teams to see new writers grow.

What interests do you have outside of work?

I love to travel outside the US as much as possible (really looking forward to my 5-year sabbatical). I'm also a big reader and I love to paint.
