Project Management

Background

Hometown: Grew up in Wisconsin
Education: BSN, University of Wisconsin
Professional: Worked as an OR nurse

Why did you choose to join Epic?

I was working as an OR nurse when I was trying to decide - do I go back to school or take on a nurse manager position, when I saw an ad for Epic in the local paper... I thought, "Gee I think I could do that." So I came in for a few interviews. After Epic offered me a job, my husband said "Really, do they know you don't know how to turn on a computer." I said "it never came up in the interview." I've now been here for 8 years and love it.

What do you like about working at Epic?

Two things - I love the people and the variety. You are a team; you are never alone; if you ask for help you get it. Everyone is really smart, puts in 100%, and wants to do good stuff. You never feel like someone is not putting in their all. You also get a ton of variety and independence. There is never a dull moment; every day brings new work, new people, new customers and new puzzles to solve.

What results have you achieved for our customers and for you?

In 8 years I've helped numerous customers define their clinical implementations as well as execute their organizational vision to have an integrated, state-of-the-art electronic record. On a personal level, I've learned a great deal about healthcare operations and general project management. More importantly I've had the opportunity to forge wonderful relationships with my teams. To this day I continue to stay in contact to my first customers.

What's your favorite project to date at Epic?

This is a tough one, there are ups and downs to all of them, and every project I've been on has had creative things to make it fun or different. For example on one project when we were traveling we would have "mandatory fun night" were the entire team would go out and do something fun like go bowling or play pool. On another project we weekly would nominate team members for internal awards like the Hot Shot or the Henrietta. The Hot shot was for doing something great and the Henrietta was for doing something silly like going on a trip and forgetting your suitcase at home (not me :) )

What are you passionate about?

As a nurse, I see so many inefficiencies in healthcare as well as potential areas for improvement in the quality of care we provide. I'm also acutely sensitive to the continued pressures of healthcare organizations and providers to meet tougher and tougher standards of care and needing to provide detailed documentation to support that care. Every day, healthcare providers have more to do, sicker patients to care for, more uninsured, and more forms to complete to obtain reimbursement. Health care providers and patients need our help and we have the potential and we are changing the way healthcare is being delivered.

What interests do you have outside of work?

I love gardening and make some mean salsa (pretty good chili too)!
